Lafayette used a career-high 22 points from Paul Cummins to do what they do every year — beat Army, this time by a 76-68 score. The game snapped Army’s three-game win streak and Lafayette’s three-game losing streak, and was Lafayette’s ninth straight victory over the Black Knights, a streak dating back to Feb. of 2002.
Although this year’s Army team is much improved, they once again could not stop a balanced attack from Lafayette and an incredible onslaught of points. Only Notre Dame scored more points (88) on the stingy Army defense this season than the Leopards. Army was ranked first in the Patriot League holding opponents to and average field goal percentage of 38.9 percent. But Lafayette blew that wide open with 56.1 percent shooting from the floor. Andrew Brown, coming off a career high 30-point performance at Lehigh netted 17 and Everest Schmidt added 11.
Lafayette had their way inside and outside offensively, as they did not have a shot blocked all night from an Army team that in second in the Patriot League with 3.2 blocks per game. Also, Lafayette was all over the boards out rebounding Army 31-23. Keeping pace with their league-leading 14.4 assists per game, the Leopards notched 14 assists on 23 made baskets.
For Army, the only bright spot was guard Matt Bell’s 23 points on clutch shooting and tough shots. With all the attention given to star Jarell Brown, Bell was able to shake free and try to keep Army close on 8-for-11 shooting. Four of those eight were three-pointers. Brown had a tough night from the floor, although he still managed to chalk up 18 points which keeps him on track with Holy’s Cross’s Keith Simmons as they battle for the Patriot League’s leading scorer title. What was amazing was Brown’s season high in field goal attempts, taking many ill-advised shots going only 8-of-24 from the field. To put that in perspective, Brown attempted almost as many shots as the whole Army team made (28).

Keys to the Game |
Key sequence |
Lafayette came out to open the game gunning. Their first 6 shots were three-pointers, connecting on 4 of them. This helped them jump on Army with an early 7-point lead with 14:44 go to in the half. The early outside game helped soften up the middle for Schmidt who worked hard down low all night to give Fran O’Hanlon the offensive balance that he’s been looking for all season.

Key sign it was over |
With 3:35 remaining, Lafayette led by a whopping 15 points in a second half that was dominated by the Leopards. Although the Black Knights managed to tie the score at 42-42 early in the second half, the outcome from there on was never in doubt. Lafayette’s 24-for-28 foul shooting from the game helped ensure the victory.

Key performance |
With a career-high 22 points, Cummins was the lift the Leopards needed. Behind 8-for-13 shooting, 6 of which were three-pointers, the junior guard from Ireland looked comfortable and in-rhythm all night long.
|
Key statistic |
Lafayette’s stellar shooting: From the field 56.1 percent, and 55.6 percent from beyond the arc, not to mention 71.4 percent from the free throw line.

Notes |
– |
Coming into the game, Army was ranked 6th in the nation among Division I schools in three-point percentage at 43.8 percent. Tonight’s game will deal a substantial blow to that ranking as they only mustered 33.3 percent on 8-for-24 shooting.

This is one of the few times this season that Lafayette has put together a full 40 minutes of basketball, something that O’Hanlon has been stressing. When asked if the team was starting to loose focus trying to hold on to a 15-point lead with, 3:35 to play, O’Hanlon replied “We have to learn how to get up by 15 before we can worry about that.â€
