Hart Center – Worcester, MA Boxscore
Holy Cross stayed undefeated in Patriot League play, downing Navy 61-42. The win marks Holy Cross’ 16th consecutive win over the Midshipmen, dating back to 2000.

The first half was a very low-scoring affair, with both teams shooting below 30 percent from the field. Holy Cross started off the game trying to expose the weak interior defense of Navy by going to Tim Clifford on 3 consecutive possessions, but there was no success there. Clifford, who is third on Holy Cross in scoring, had a horrible first half, scoring no points and turning the ball over 4 times. There were minor runs for both teams during the half but for the most part it was a back-and-forth fight, and at the half the score was 20-19..

However, the second half started out very strong for Holy Cross. With 18:16 left in the half, Torey Thomas stole the ball at half court, drove down the court and was fouled trying to make a fast break lay-up. Thomas would go on to make both free throws, and all momentum went in Holy Cross’ favor.

After that, the Crusaders went on a huge 15-2 run that lasted 6 minutes. Both Keith Simmons and Alex Vander Baan stepped up elevated their games, completely dominating Navy during the second half. By the end of the game Simmons and Vander Baan combined for 35 points.

Keys to the Game
Key sequence With 13:55 left in the second half, Simmons hit a three-pointer and extended Holy Cross’ run to 15-2. The crowd was fully into it after this play, and Holy Cross never looked back. Even though Navy started to find their way on offense after this, Holy Cross continued their strong offensive push.
Key sign it was over With 3:12 left in the game, Vander Baan grabbed an offensive rebound off a missed free throw by Thomas and went straight up with it to get the easy basket. The lead was now 56-39. After this play, the crowd began to leave the arena and within thirty seconds Holy Cross took all of their starters off the court.
Key performance Alex Vander Baan played 32 minutes tonight and put up terrific numbers. He had 13 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and a block. Not only were his stats great, but he was all over the floor the entire night grabbing loose balls and out-hustling every player on the floor.
Key statistic Holy Cross took 17 free throws compared to Navy’s 8, and Holy Cross made 12 of them. At the end of the night Holy Cross had +7 points on free throws alone.

Notes
Keith Simmons was named Anaconda Patriot League Player of the Week last week for the third straight week, and the fourth time this season
Holy Cross only had 7 bench points tonight, compared to 24 by Navy. Navy’s Adam Teague scored 17 points off the bench, the only bright spot for Navy the entire night.
Second chance points: HC 13, Navy 2.
Both teams hit the road for rivalry games this weekend. Holy Cross is at American Saturday, and Navy travels to Army Sunday for a game that will be televised on ESPNU.
