The Bucknell Bison were able to withstand a resilient and combative Lafayette team that stayed in step with the Bison up until the closing seconds, before downing the Leopards 67-61. In a shootout in Easton, the Leopards led the entire first half, but characteristically did not perform in the second half to allow the Bison to sneak back into the game.
Bucknell’s leading scorer Donald Brown came up big again with a game high 19 points. Shooting 7-for-11 from the field, Brown consistently took in to the Lafayette defense and he effectively drove the lane opening up the outside for Jason Vegotsky, who followed close behind with 18 points.
The Leopards set the tone of the game with an early 10-1 run before Bucknell head coach Pat Flannery took a timeout with 15:42. The most surprising aspect was how the Leopards converted those early points: from inside the paint. Bilal Abdullah had a nice old-fashioned three-point play followed by 2 Everest Schmitt inside lay-ins to start off the game.
Donald Brown soon woke up with a huge inside put back dunk at the 13-minute mark to kick-start the Bison offense. He would have 10 of his 19 points in the first half on 4-for-6 shooting. Donald Brown’s performance was a bright spot in an overall dismal first half performance from the Bison, who shot 38.5 percent from the field and did not take control of the lead for the entire half, although they did bring the deficit to 2 points at halftime.
Coming out of the locker room in the second half, the Leopards looked like they would extend their lead, as Andrew Brown drained 2 three-pointers in the first 5 minutes. Andrew Brown led the Leopards with 14 points 4-for-9 shooting, with all of his hits being on three-pointers. Lafayette’s lead would not last as Vegotsky hit back-to-back threes at the 11:48 mark to give the Bison their first lead at 41-40. The game from there went back and forth at an up-tempo pace as the Bison maintained their lead, but not by much. Lafayette kept it within a possession all the way up until the end, when it became a free throw contest. Bucknell proceeded to go perfect from the line to seal the hard-fought road win.

Keys to the Game |
Key sequence |
With 1:09 to go, Matt Betley got called for a controversial foul going for a loose ball to put Donald Brown on the line, and he sunk both shots. From there on out, the Leopards were forced to play the foul game, a game that Bucknell plays well.
|
Key sign it was over |
After the questionable foul call on Betley, the ensuing 2 free throws were drained by Brown to put the Bison up by 3, and Abdullah brought the ball down the floor and just threw the ball away. The ‘Pards were not forced to foul at that point but another controversial call, a hand-check foul on Paul Cummins, pretty much put it away as Vegotsky drained 2 more free throws to ice it. From there on out Lafayette was forced to foul and hope for some misses from the line, which did not come.
|
Key performance |
Donald Brown’s relentless hustle and attack of the paint carried the Bison through their early-game lulls. He put the team on his back and the Lafayette defense was forced to respond. When they did, the outside opened up for Vegotsky. Brown’s 5-for-7 performance from the free throw line ensured the victory as well for Bucknell.
|
Key statistic |
After setting season-highs for field goal percentage in two straight games (57 percent vs. Holy Cross, and 64 percent at Colgate), the Leopards came back down to earth tonight, shooting a pedestrian 44.7 percent. If they could have mustered another 50 percent or greater performance, they may have pulled this one off.

Notes |
– |
Lafayette head coach Fran O’Hanlon discussed the team’s lack of a go-to guy in the waning minutes of the game, which costs them close finishes. Lafayette needs a defined leader to look to when they need clutch plays down the stretch, O’Hanlon said.

Once again the Leopards were outrebounded, 39-23. Despite their strong inside presence in the beginning, they could not hold it for the entire game as Chris McNaughton made his presence known with a game-high 11 rebounds and 9 points.

Bucknell was coming off its first Patriot League loss in nearly two years, when they dropped a close one at Holy Cross 65-60 last Friday. A trip to Lafayette cured all that and set them back on the right track.
