Holy Cross knocked off Bucknell 65-60 in a game that was in front of an audience of 3,123 and was broadcast on ESPNU. Holy Cross leaves 3-0 in league play, while Bucknell drops to 2-1.

Holy Cross and Bucknell started off the game playing very strong man-to-man defense, making it very difficult for either team to score during the first 2 minutes of the game. Holy Cross’ Torey Thomas started off the game tonight by nailing a three-pointer deep outside the line. Holy Cross also got a great deal of support from their role players off the bench. Pat Doherty and Eric Meister combined for 12 points in the half, shooting 5-of-7 from the field including Doherty hitting 2 from three-point land. The Bison never led all game.

Bucknell got very little from their major players during the half. Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year Chris McNaughton got two very early fouls and was forced to only play 9 minutes in the first half. At the end of the half Holy Cross led by 6.

The Crusaders led off the second half with a huge block by Keith Simmons, which was followed by a three pointer made by Thomas. Holy Cross then went on a 7-2 run to start off the half and led throughout the entire second half. For the first fifteen minutes of the half, Holy Cross completely dominated; they led throughout and had twice the energy that Bucknell possessed. During the final 5 minutes, Bucknell fired back and cut the lead to 1. The Bison were led by the strong play of Justin Castleberry, who off the bench scored 16 points (8 in the second half). During the final minute of the game, Holy Cross was able to convert on their free throws, and grab more offensive rebounds, which led to them winning the game.

Keys to the Game
Key sequence The Crusaders’ 7-2 run to start the second half pushed Holy Cross ahead by 11 points, their largest lead to that point. Thomas began the run with a long three and Tim Clifford pitched in with two baskets in the paint, while the vaunted Crusader defense held off Bucknell’s attempts at scoring.
Key sign it was over With 33 seconds left in the game, Thomas was fouled while driving to the hoop. He made the first and missed the second free throw, but Alex Vander Baan was able to grab the offensive rebound. On that same possession Simmons was fouled again and made 1 of 2 free throws. The lead was now 63-60 and Bucknell failed to score in their final chances.
Key performance Clifford had a horrible first half but came up strong in the second half. He had 13 points, all in the second half, and grabbed 8 rebounds in the game. Although he was not the game’s leading scorer, without him Holy Cross would not have been able to keep up in the second half.
Key statistic Simmons took 13 free throws tonight and made 12 of them. Holy Cross as a team took 10 more free throws then Bucknell, and made 9 more than the Bison.

Notes
Holy Cross had 7 players log more than 20 minutes tonight.
Holy Cross shot 6-of-14 from three-point land; Simmons, Thomas and Doherty got 2 apiece. Bucknell was 8-of-21 from the arc, with Castleberry and John Griffin hitting 3 each.
Rebounds: Holy Cross 31, Bucknell 19.
Holy Cross had only 10 assists in the game compared to their 16 turnovers. In contrast Bucknell had 15 assists and 12 turnovers.
The Bison did not come to this game alone; they brought with them a bus full of hometown fans from Lewisburg, and their own cheerleaders.
Holy Cross hosts Navy this week, while Bucknell hits the road to Lafayette Wednesday night.

  1. John Miller Says:

Your “key sign it was over” is incorrect. McNaughton actually got the rebound, was pulled to the floor by Van der baan, and then tied up. Because the arrow was in HC’s favor, they got the ball back.

Actually the key to that sequence was the awful block call that sent Thomas to the line in the first place. Sure looked like a charge on the replay.
