In an exciting double-overtime contest, Navy outlasted Howard 79-75. The Bison forced two extra periods despite never leading the final ten minutes of regulation and both overtimes.

Navy began the game with a 10-2 lead, but Howard responded with a 12-4 run to tie it. Howard briefly led a few times, including a 26-23 lead on a Darek Mitchell trey with 2:06 left in the half. Navy went on a 9-2 run, with two three-pointers from Bryce Brigham and one from Trey Stanton, to bring a 5-point lead into the locker room. Howard stayed in it, and took a brief 42-41 lead on another Mitchell three, but Stanton responded with a three and the Bison never led again the rest of the game.

In the final minute, Adam Teague dunked with 46 seconds to give Navy a 2-point lead. Eugene Myatt hit a pair of free throws to tie it. The Mids ran the clock down but Corey Johnson missed a potential game-winner with 3 seconds left. In the first overtime, the lead was never more than 2 points. Sprink hit a lay-up with 28 seconds left to take a lead, but Julius Hearn hit a jumper to tie it. Again Navy ran down the clock, but Sprink turned it over with 7 seconds left and Hearn missed what would have been a game-winning shot.

Kaleo Kina scored 20 to lead the Midshipmen. Johnson had 17 points and Sprink 15. Darryl Hudson had a game-high 26 points for the Bison, and Mitchell pitched in 11 off the bench on 3 three-pointers.

Keys to the Game
Key sequence In the second overtime, Navy’s first possession was a Kina jumper. Their second resulted in 2 Johnson free throws, their third in Johnson hitting 1 free throw, and their fourth in Sprink hitting a pair of free throws. In the same time, Howard missed three shots and turned the ball over twice.
Key sign it was over After three missed Johnson free throws, Howard had the ball down 74-68 with 54 seconds left in the second overtime. No miracle this time, though, as Will Gant turned it over, and Kina hit 1 of 2 free throws with 35 seconds left to make it a three-possession game.
Key performance Despite a poor shooting night (0-of-5) for three, Sprink scored 15 points, grabbed 9 boards and tossed 4 assists.
Key statistic Howard shot just 25-for-39 from the free throw line, leaving behind points that could have won them the game multiple times.

Notes
Sprink and Kina had 4 assists each, and Johnson added 3. The Mids had 16 assists and 16 turnovers.
Howard only shot 9 three-pointers all game, hitting 4.
Howard dominated the boards 42-30.
After going 6-for-8 from the line for the entire regulation, Navy was 18-of-24 on free throws in the two overtimes. All but 4 of the Mids’ overtime points came from the line.
Navy got 16 bench points, with Teague scoring 10 and Brigham 6. Howard’s bench had 33.
Navy’s next game is a home battle with Penn, which will be broadcast on CSTV.
