The Colgate Raiders lost to the Harvard Crimson 76-64 at home to drop to 3-3 on the year. Colgate was forced to play without several key contributors in the second half due to foul trouble. In addition, starting forward Tim Pounds also missed the game with a family emergency. After the fouls began to mount, the Raiders couldn’t slow Brian Cusworth on the inside and Jim Goffredo from beyond the arc.

In the early minutes Colgate and Harvard both looked sloppy on the offensive end. Colgate began the game with 5 turnovers. Mad scrabbles for loose balls had players falling hard. Colgate couldn’t get the early points like they have had in previous victories because of the defensive presence of seven-footer Brian Cusworth. A lack of production inside prompted Colgate to take outside shots, going 6-of-15 early and playing Harvard even through the first five minutes. The game was tied 6-6.

Harvard was able to put together a 4-0 run on flawless shooting from the foul line by Jeremy Lin and Evan Harris. Colgate put a 4-0 run of its own, sparked by Daniel Waddy and Kendall Chones. Kendall Chones was able to penetrate the Harvard defense more consistently after the early going, with the Raiders out-scoring the Crimson 10-8 in the paint for the half. Despite the increase in production, an ugly foul on a three-point shooter by Daniel Waddy put Harvard on the line for 3 shots. The Waddy foul began a 7-0 Crimson run. Waddy had 3 fouls early and had to limit his minutes. Willy Morse answered the call, removing the ice from his knee and scoring 6 in the first half. Colgate put together an 8-0 run of its own, with Morse and Jon Simon scoring the points. The Raiders switched their defense to man-to-man with only a few minutes left in the half. The defensive switch kept Harvard from going on any more runs in the half and Colgate held a 29-28 advantage going into the half.

The second half began with Colgate getting into foul trouble. Marc Daniels picked up two fouls in the opening minutes giving him four for the game and a trip to the bench. Harvard took advantage of Daniel’s absence, pounding the ball inside against Peter Minchella. Minchella picked up two fouls in two minutes of action in the first, and followed up by getting two more with one minute of action in the second. The fouls forced Alex Woodhouse into significant minutes. Opening up a 12-4 run, Harvard took the lead 42-34. The Crimson shot 7-of-8 from the foul line to start the second. With 13:08 left in the second half, Harvard was in the double bonus.

Kendall Chones did his best to usher back a Raider comeback, scoring 6 straight points and bringing Colgate back to within 3, 43-40. Harvard countered on the hot hand of Jim Goffredo. After not hitting a single three-pointer in the first half, Goffredo halted a 5-0 Colgate run with two threes. The sudden flurry of scoring gave Harvard a three-possession lead for the first time. From that point, Colgate couldn’t ever get back into the contest. Harvard led by at least 7 the rest of the game and bullied the foul-depleted Raiders. Harvard shot over 80.0 percent from the foul line throughout the game, icing the victory.

Keys to the Game
Key sequence Colgate, on a 5-0 run, looked to be claiming the momentum, down 43-40. Goffredo hit two straight threes, silencing the home crowd and giving the Crimson a 9-point lead.
Key sign it was over With 3:01 left in the game, Jon Simon sunk a three-pointer to close the deficit to 9. Goffredo countered with a deep three of his own to put the Crimson back on top by four possessions.
Key performance Cusworth proved to be two much for the Raiders, getting Raider big men in foul trouble early and scoring a career high 23 points.
Key statistic 17 turnovers for the Raiders. Colgate couldn’t ever get on a run in the second half because key players were stuck on the bench. The lack of continuity kept the Raiders from putting up desperately needed second-half points.
