Keys to the Game
Key sequence When Keith Simmons finished off a fastbreak with a layup to put Holy Cross up by 10 with 3:06 left, things looked bleak for Yale. But Eric Flato answered with a layup at the other end, and Travis Pinick blocked an Alex Vander Baan shot, then converted a layup of his own to cut the deficit to six. Alexander Zampier came up with a steal, and after a timeout, Sam Kaplan was the latest participant in the layup line, drawing the Bulldogs to within 56-52 with 1:30 left. Vander Baan misfired on a three-pointer, but Simmons grabbed the offensive rebound and Yale was forced to foul. Torey Thomas hit just one of two free throws, but Tim Clifford blocked Pinick’s shot and Vander Baan controlled the rebound. The Bulldogs fouled Doherty, who hit both shots from the line to move the margin back to seven points with 38 seconds left.
Key sign it was over A Pinick layup with made it a one-possession game with eight seconds left, and Yale immediately fouled Doherty after the inbounds. The Holy Cross guard hit two free throws to put the Crusaders up five, and when Eric Flato missed on a three-point attempt with five ticks left and Holy Cross grabbed the rebound, the Crusaders escaped with the win.
Key performance Doherty provided Ralph Willard with a major spark off the bench, leading all scorers with 18 points, while dishing out four assists and coming up with three steals in 32 minutes. Doherty was 5 of 6 from the field, hitting all four three-pointers.
Key statistic In a game that was otherwise very even statistically, both teams had 22 field goals. However, Yale attempted only four three-pointers, missing all four, while Holy Cross was 6 of 11 from outside the arc. Those six extra points loomed large in the end.
