One week after beating Loyola College in a high-scoring track meet, American proved they can also win defensive battles, toppling Mount St. Mary’s 59-46. American held the Mount to 30.4 percent field goal shooting on the night.
Andre Ingram struggled from the floor, shooting 5-of-13, but was still the game’s top scorer with 15 points. Ingram hit 2 treys, and added 7 defensive rebounds and 2 steals. Derrick Mercer added 11 points, hitting 9 of 13 free throw attempts. Mercer also tossed 7 assists.
The two teams traded the lead for the start of the game. Finally, at 6:56 Mount St. Mary’s went up 17-14 on a Chris Vann trey. The Mount would not score another point in the first half, as American ran off 15 unanswered points to take command. Mount St. Mary’s responded with a 9-0 run early in the second half and twice pulled within 3, but could get no closer. Vann led the Mount with 11 points on 5-of-14 shooting.

Keys to the Game |
Key sequence |
The Mount cut their deficit to 37-34 with 12:28 left in the game on a Jeremy Goode trey. Twice the Eagles missed a shot and Mount St. Mary’s had the ball with a shot at tying the game, but they missed both shots. Finally Brian Gilmore hit a three-pointer to put American up by 6. After a timeout, the Mount missed another shot, and Ingram responded with a trey to make the score 43-34. American would never look back, leading by at least 7 the rest of the way.

Key sign it was over |
With 1:49 left, Will Holland hit a three to make it a 7-point game. American ran 28 seconds off the clock before being fouled, and Ingram hit a pair of free throws. Mychal Kearse had a lay-up blocked by Brayden Billbe, and Mount St. Mary’s chances had evaporated. |
