Keys to the Game |
Key sequence |
When Drew Housman drove and converted a layup to tie the game at 63-63 with 4:29 left, Tim Clifford put Holy Cross back on top with a bucket on the next possession. After a Crimson turnover, Pat Doherty drilled a huge three-pointer to put the Crusaders up five. Jim Goffredo had a long three-pointer rim out, then Holy Cross big man Alex Vander Baan stepped out and knocked down a three-pointer to stretch the Crusader lead to 71-63 with 2:34 left.
|
Key sign it was over |
Trailing by eight with just over two minutes left, Goffredo turned over the ball. Keith Simmons got open for a three-pointer that pushed the Crusader lead to 11 with just 96 seconds left. Simmons then came up with a steal at the other end, and Goffredo was whistled for the intentional foul. Torey Thomas hit one of two at the line, then Housman fouled Thomas on the subsequent possession. The Holy Cross guard his both free throws to complete a 14-0 run that gave the Crusaders a 77-63 lead with under a minute to play. |
Key performance |
Holy Cross center Tim Clifford tied for high scoring honors with 22 points. Harvard was content to leave Clifford open, and the big man responded by scoring nine of the Crusaders’ first 11 points. Clifford scored 16 points in the first half on perfect 7-for-7 shooting. At the end of the game, he had outplayed Harvard star Brian Cusworth, who was held to just 10 points on a 4-for-10 performance from the field.
|
Key statistic |
Harvard had a season-low 14 turnovers, but Holy Cross converted those miscues into 23 points. The Crimson forced 12 Crusader turnovers, but only got 10 points off of them. The 13-point differential in points off turnovers proved to be the final margin.

Notes
– Goffredo led Harvard in scoring with 22 points, largely on the strength of a big night from outside the arc. The senior guard knocked down 5 of 9 three-point attempts.
– The game nearly was a mirror image of last year’s contest in Worcester, when Harvard pulled away late to turn a close game into a 15-point win.
– The Crimson did a good job defensively on Simmons in the first half, holding the Holy Cross star to just five points on 2-for-6 shooting at halftime. But Simmons busted out in the second half, registering 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting, including three important three-pointers from the left corner.
– Harvard sophomore Evan Harris went 0-for-7 from the field, but finished with eight points thanks to 8-of-10 free throw shooting.
– The Crimson was in the bonus less than five minutes into the second half, and went into the double bonus at the 12:24 mark. But Harvard failed capitalize on the Crusaders’ elevated foul count, as Holy Cross wouldn’t be whistled for another foul until 50 seconds remained and the Crimson trailed by 13 points.
– Holy Cross will look to improve to 5-0 on Saturday, November 25 at 2:00 pm ET when it hosts William & Mary at the Hart Center.
