Brian Keefer scored a game-high 23 points, including several big late baskets, as Cornell held off the Black Knights of Army 65-56.
After an even start to the game, Cornell had a 13-4 run to open up a lead. Army fought to keep it close, but Cornell scored the final 5 points of the half to take a 7-point lead. In the second half, Army ran off an 11-2 run to make the game close in the final two minutes, but Keefer and the Big Red bore down and hit 10 of 11 free throws in the last 1:18 of the game to hold on.
Keefer was aided by Ryan Wittman’s 14 points and 2 blocks, and Louis Dale chipped in 12 points for Cornell. Matt Bell led Army with 12 points and 3 assists, and Corban Bates added 11 points and 6 boards. Black Knight scorer Jarell Brown was held to 8 points on 2-for-16 shooting.

With 2:36 to play in the first half, Doug Williams hit a lay-up in transition to cut Army’s deficit to 27-25. Andrew Naeve hit a lay-up, and Bell missed the front end of a one-and-one for the Black Knights. Pete Reynolds hit 1 of 2 free throws for Cornell, and after the teams exchanged missed shots in the final minute, Dale stole the ball for the Big Red with 5 seconds left and laid it in as the half expired, giving Cornell a working margin of 7.

With 1:51 to go in the game, Chris Walker tipped in a Bell miss to make the score 52-48 Cornell. The Big Red called timeout, and ran a play that resulted in a Keefer three-pointer from the corner. Walker missed a pair of free throws for Army, and then Keefer hit a couple from the stripe to make it a 57-48 game with 1:18 left.
