Four players scored in double figures for Maryland-Baltimore County as the Retrievers downed Lafayette 86-51. UMBC hit 58.2 percent of field goal attempts on the night, including 12 three-pointers.

Jay Greene scored 18 and Chris Pugh added 17 for the Retrievers. Greene and Pugh hit 6 and 5 three-pointers, respectively. Matt Betley led the Leopards with 18 points, the only Lafayette player in double figures. Betley was 3-for-3 from beyond the arc; the rest of the Leopards were a combined 5-for-19.

UMBC sprinted out to a 15-3 lead, with Pugh scoring 8 of those points. Lafayette came within 6 in the first half, and trailed by just 9 points midway through the second half. But the Retrievers ended the game on a 33-7 run to bury the Leopards.

 
Keys to the Game
Key sequence After a slow start, Lafayette led 3-2 at 16:19 in the first half. The Leopards’ next four possessions featured 3 missed shots and a turnover. Meanwhile, Greene and Pugh hit back-to-back treys, followed by a pair of second-chance lay-ups, and another three by Pugh.
Key sign it was over With 12:25 left in the game, Paul Cummins hit a trey to cut the score to 53-44, and Lafayette seemed to have a glimmer of hope. Greene responded with a three of his own, and Bilal Abdullah missed a long shot. Mike Housman nailed a pair of free throws, and after Cummins missed another trey attempt, Tom Young hit a lay-up in transition to establish a 16-point lead. The Leopards hit just one more field goal all game.
Key performance Greene ran the Retriever offense with aplomb, scoring 18 points, including 6 treys, and dished 8 assists. Greene’s offensive execution led to his team’s 58.2 percent field goal percentage.
Key statistic UMBC nailed 12 of 23 three-pointers on the night.

UMBC dominated Lafayette on the boards, outrebounding the Leopards 39-17.
