In an up-and-down game, it was Lafayette that had the last laugh, beating Wagner 76-70 in Staten Island. The Leopards withstood losing a 19-point lead to regain control in the second half.
Lafayette opened the game up 19-2 after five minutes, on the strength of 5 three-pointers. But Wagner chipped away, getting within 10 at halftime before going on a 13-0 run early in the second half to take a 42-41 lead. After some back-and-forth jostling, Lafayette again used the three-ball to stake a lead, going up by 14 with two minutes left before Wagner made the final score closer in garbage time.
Lafayette relied on the long-range shot all night, hitting 10 of 23 attempts. Wagner was less careful with the three pointer, nailing just 9 of 30 tries. Lafayette’s backcourt led the way; Jamaal Hilliard scored a team-high 16 points, and Andrew Brown and Bilal Abdullah added 15 and 14 respectively.
