In an up-and-down game, it was Lafayette that had the last laugh, beating Wagner 76-70 in Staten Island. The Leopards withstood losing a 19-point lead to regain control in the second half.

Lafayette opened the game up 19-2 after five minutes, on the strength of 5 three-pointers. But Wagner chipped away, getting within 10 at halftime before going on a 13-0 run early in the second half to take a 42-41 lead. After some back-and-forth jostling, Lafayette again used the three-ball to stake a lead, going up by 14 with two minutes left before Wagner made the final score closer in garbage time.

Lafayette relied on the long-range shot all night, hitting 10 of 23 attempts. Wagner was less careful with the three pointer, nailing just 9 of 30 tries. Lafayette’s backcourt led the way; Jamaal Hilliard scored a team-high 16 points, and Andrew Brown and Bilal Abdullah added 15 and 14 respectively.

Key sequence After Wagner regained the lead, Lafayette bounced back and was playing with a slight edge. After Wagner cut their deficit to 65-60 with 4:02 left, Matt Betley hit two three throws, then Wagner turned the ball over, leading up to another Brown three-pointer. Lafayette had reestablished control, taking a 10-point lead with 3:21 remaining.
Key sign it was over From 2:43 to 0:53, Wagner was able to muster only two points, as they missed all three field goal attempts and Lafayette ran down the clock whenever they could.
Key performance Leopards point guard Andrew Brown hit 5 of 8 shots, all from beyond the arc, for 15 points. He added 5 assists.
Key statistic Lafayette shot 50.0 percent from the field, and held Wagner to 37.3 percent field goal shooting.
 
Notes
Wagner’s Joey Mundweiler hoisted up 15 three-point attempts off the bench, hitting 7.
Lafayette hit 18 of 22 free throw attempts.
The Leopards were outrebounded 41-30. Wagner grabbed an amazing 20 offensive rebounds.
With starters Matt Betley and Everest Schmidt in foul trouble in the second half, freshman Andre Hines saw 9 minutes of playing time. He scored 5 points, nabbed 1 steal and recorded 3 fouls.
Removing Mark Porter’s 6-of-7 free throw shooting, the rest of the Seahawks went 11-for-22 from the line.
