Sloppy offensive possessions undid Colgate in its home opener, as they lost to the Stony Brook Seawolves 65-59. Colgate shot just 38.3 percent from the field. Stony Brook shot 48.0 percent from the field and received another great performance down the stretch from Mitchell Beauford.
The first half was sloppy for both teams. Stony Brook took an early lead by dictating the tempo and converting its fast break opportunities. Beauford stole a Colgate inbound pass at 13:26 and drew a foul. This set up Ricky Lucas on the baseline for an easy lay-in, to give Stony Brook held an early 13-6 lead. Colgate was able to take a lead early despite a lack of offensive production by playing solid defense, most notably Trevaron Vinson. Vinson had two steals and two defensive rebounds in the first half. Both Vinson’s steals and rebounds came at key times to slow down Stony Brook’s momentum. Late in the first half Stony Brook turned the ball over five times, leading to 10 Colgate points. A late dunk by C Marc Daniels with two seconds on the shot clock helped put Colgate up 5 at the half, 24-19. The second half scoring was dominated by the guard play of Lucas and Beauford, who ended up with 18 and 20 points, respectively. Stony Brook went on two separate 7-0 runs in the second half and with 4:22 left, Stony Brook was up 15. Colgate tried to stage a comeback, closing to within 2 late in the final minutes on three-pointers from Kyle Chones, Jon Simon and Dan Gentile. But after a Simon foul put Beauford on the line, he hit both shots to ice the victory. Beauford went 6-6 from the foul line with under a minute to play. |

Keys to the Game | |
Key sequence | Tim Pounds missed a lay-up which would have tied the game with 11:30 left. Stony Brook then scored two on a jumper from Mike Popoko to go up 4. Colgate scored two points on a Vinson shot. The Raiders didn’t score again for three minutes. When Colgate finally did score it was due to a technical foul, called when Andre Vanterpool hung on the rim after a two-handed jam. Colgate could never seem to recover. |
Key sign it was over | Beauford, the second time he was fouled and put on the line, hit both of his attempts to put the Seawolves up 4 with 11 seconds left. |
Key performance | Despite an incredible performance by Beauford, the brightest spot for Stony Brook was transfer Ricky Lucas. Lucas spent the summer playing for the East Coast All-Stars in Scandinavia. He averaged 16 points overseas, and opened up his Seawolves career with 18. |
Key statistic | Stony Brook turnovers: only four after halftime. Colgate turned the ball over twice as much (nine) in the second half. |
