American finally gets an AD

22 March, 2007

by

American University announced Thursday that Keith Gill will be its new athletic director, effective June 1. Gill comes from Oklahoma, where he had been a senior associate AD since 2004. Prior to that, Gill was director of membership services for the NCAA. American had been without an AD since September, when Joni Comstock left to become vice president of championships for the NCAA.

Slant: For basketball purposes, the key to this news is that Gill doesn’t take the reins until June. If there were to be any large-scale changes to Jeff Jones’ program, it would happen in the coming weeks, not in the summer. There is pressure on Jones for failing to reach the Patriot League title game for the last three years, but the focus in D.C. has shifted away from basketball a bit, with American wrestler Josh Glenn bringing home a national title for the school last week.
