Navy’s Johnson decides to leave team

14 March, 2007

by

According to the Annapolis Capital, Corey Johnson, who was Navy’s starting point guard this past season, has decided to leave the basketball team and join the Naval Academy football squad. Navy coach Billy Lange said Johnson’s decision was based on a decrease in minutes, and that Johnson’s first love was football rather than hoops.

Slant: A young team bringing back its entire rotaton next year, Navy will be immensely hurt by losing a three-year starter and co-captain. Chris Harris performed well in limited minutes as a back-up freshman point guard, but he is more a shooter than the penetrate-and-dish style that Johnson played. A reasonable expectation is that Harris starts with Kaleo Kina at two-guard next year, but Kina mans the point fairly frequently alongside Bryce Brigham and Clif Colbert. The Mids have a lot of young players to pick up minutes, but the loss of a steady hand at point will show early next season.

  1. Steve Says:

I disagree… After watching Navy play all year, Johnson did NOTHING the last half of the year. Navy will be fine without Johnson, as there are several young players that will step up and take his role.
Corey Johnson was not a steady hand and did nothing from December on.
