Keith Simmons and Torey Thomas both sleepwalked through the first half, but the pair of Holy Cross seniors awakened in the second half and survived a late American rally to lead the Crusaders back to the Patriot League Tournament final for the third straight season with a 55-53 win over the Eagles.
Holy Cross jumped out to an early four-point lead on a Thomas three-pointer — the only three of the first half by the home team. It was 14-10 after a Tim Clifford putback at the 12:08 mark, but American would come alive. The Eagles scored the next 12 points of the game to claim an eight-point advantage with under eight minutes left in the half, and took a 26-21 lead into halftime. The Holy Cross locker room couldn’t have been a pleasant place, with Simmons and Thomas combining for just eight points on 2-for-8 shooting and the Crusaders hitting just 28.6 percent of its attempts as a team. The second half got off to an inauspicious start for the home team, with Ingram again connecting from the outside to tie the biggest American lead of the afternoon at eight. It was 31-23 when Holy Cross ripped off a 12-2 run to equalize at 33 with 12:25 remaining. With the game still tied at 40 with under nine minutes to play, the Crusaders again went on a run, getting out and scoring in transition and getting nine unanswered points to storm ahead 49-40 with 5:08 on the clock. Rather than folding up camp, American fought back, scoring the next seven points to pull within two with inside of three minutes remaining. Eitutavicius went to the line with a chance to tie, but missed the front end of a one-and-one. At the other end, Clifford’s hook bounced in with 1:33 left. The Eagles found themselves trailing 53-50 in the final minute, when Ingram’s three-pointer struck the rim, bounced about 10 feet up in the air, and dropped through the basket to tie the game with 36.7 seconds left. After a timeout, Simmons drove and hit a leaner with 4.8 seconds showing on the clock to put the Crusaders back on top. Jeff Jones drew up a play in the huddle, but Pat Doherty threw a wrench in the works by getting a hand on the inbounds pass. Brayden Billbe picked up the loose ball, and threw up an 85-foot heave that never reached the rim, as Holy Cross pulled out the win. |
Keys to the Game | |
Key sequence | Thomas keyed the second Crusader run that ultimately proved to be too much for the Eagles. American looked to be in trouble, down 40-35, but had knotted it up at 40 on a nice inbounds play that led to a Paulius Joneliunas bucket with 8:31 left. However, Doherty slipped inside for a layup, and Derrick Mercer committed a turnover, then a foul that led to two Thomas free throws. A minute later, Thomas grabbed a rebound of a Mercer miss and took it coast to coast for a layup and a six-point lead. Eitutavicius’s three-point attempt drew nothing but air, and at the other end, Thomas drilled a huge three from the left elbow that made it 49-40 with 5:08 to play. |
Key sign it was over |
When asked after the game about Ingram’s incredible shot that bounced in to tie the game in the final minute, Simmons said he looked into the American star’s eyes while the ball was in the air, and knew it was going to go down. The Patriot League Player of the Year then showed what he was made of, creating his own shot and hitting the eventual game-winner. In the final seconds, Billbe seemed to panic a bit after the play went awry, and probably had enough time to pass downcourt to a teammate, but opted to throw up a prayer that was way short. |
Key performance | Thomas scored seven of the nine Holy Cross points during the important late run, and was all over the court. He had game highs with nine rebounds and six assists, and scored 11 of his 16 points after halftime, repeatedly hurting American in transition. |
Key statistic | Holy Cross rebounded from a woeful shooting performance in the first 20 minutes to shoot 12 of 20 (60.0 percent) in the second half. The Crusaders’ Big Three of Clifford, Simmons, and Thomas combined for 30 of the team’s 34 second-half points, shooting 10 of 13 after halftime as a group. |
Notes | |
– | Ingram was the only American player in double figures with 20, while Clifford led the way for Holy Cross with 19. |
– | Holy Cross outscored American 32-16 in the paint, while the Eagles shot much better outside the arc, hitting 7 of 19 (36.8 percent), compared to just 3 of 15 (20.0 percent) for the Crusaders. |
– | American owned the glass in the first half, grabbing 7 of 17 (41.2 percent) of the rebounds at its own offensive end, while holding Holy Cross to just 23.8-percent offensive rebounding. However, things were much more even in the second half, and on the afternoon, the Crusaders owned a 9-4 edge in second-chance scoring. |
– | The Crusaders had eight fastbreak points. The Eagles had zero. |
– | With students on spring break, there weren’t many more Holy Cross students than American students on hand. However, there was a large contingent of families, locals, and Crusader alumni in the crowd of 3,463 that gave the hosts a decided home court advantage from a support standpoint. |
– | American finishes the season 16-14, while Holy Cross advances to face co-champion Bucknell in the tournament final on Friday, March 9 at 4:30 pm ET in a game that will be broadcast on ESPN2. |
