Patriot League Tournament first round previews

28 February, 2007

by

No. 8 Lafayette at No. 1 Holy Cross
At Lafayette: Holy Cross downed the Leopards 84-74 as Keith Simmons dropped 26 points and Torey Thomas added 18. Bilal Abdullah led Lafayette 22 points. Holy Cross shot 9-of-15 from three.
At Holy Cross: The Crusaders trounced Lafayette 74-52. Four Crusaders scored in double figures. Highlights for Lafayette were Abdullah and Jesper Andersson hitting 3 threes apiece.
Why Holy Cross should win: They dismantled Lafayette twice already and have the three best players in the game.
How Lafayette could win: An obscenely good three-point shooting display combined with major ineffectiveness by Holy Cross’ interior.

No. 7 Navy at No. 2 Bucknell
At Bucknell: Bucknell won a 59-51 game, where Navy stayed close for the first half before the Bison made a 7-0 run to claim control. Greg Sprink scored a game-high 18 points and Navy outrebounded the Bison.
At Navy: The Bison downed Navy 78-63. Again, Navy stayed close for a half before Bucknell exerted its will. Chris McNaughton had a double-double.
Why Bucknell should win: A huge size advantage.
How Navy could win: Just like Lafayette, the Mids have the ability to shoot the lights out, and 12+ made three-pointers would put Navy right in the game.

No. 6 Army at No. 3 Lehigh
At Army: Army downed the Hawks 64-59 as four Black Knights scored in double figures. Jose Olivero was held to 7 points on 2-of-6 shooting.
At Lehigh: The Hawks pulled out a 75-64 victory, as Olivero scored 30 points and Marquis Hall added 20. Jarell Brown put in 23 for Army.
Why Lehigh should win: The combination of Bryan White, Zahir Carrington and Phil Anderson up front should overpower Army’s undermanned frontline.
How Army could win: If Army shuts down Olivero the way it did in January, Brown and Matt Bell can outscore the rest of Lehigh’s scorers.

No. 5 Colgate at No. 4 American
At American: American dominated 70-48, with Andre Ingram scoring 18 first-half points. Colgate shot just 29.2 percent on the game.
At Colgate: American snuck away with a 64-58 in overtime. Colgate took a 2-point lead with 0.1 seconds remaining, but Arvydas Eitutavicius was fouled on the inbounds, and sunk a pair of free throws to force overtime. Jon Simon led all scorers with 19.
Why American should win: The Eagles are on a roll, and Colgate is without a reliable go-to scorer for crunch time.
How Colgate could win: The Raiders have done well on the road in the last month. If they can shut down Ingram, they will be right in the game.
