The Colgate Raiders ended their regular season with a win at home 70-62 over Navy. The win gives Colgate the fifth seed in the Patriot League Tournament, and dropped the Midshipmen to seventh.
Colgate came out in man-to-man defense that extended well beyond the arc, trying to turn away the deep shooters from Navy. Kyle Chones scored 7 early points to give Colgate a slight advantage to open the game, starting out 2-of-2 from beyond the arc. The emotion of Senior Day looked to wear off after the first 7 minutes, and Raider turnovers began to mount. On back-to-back possessions, Kaleo Kina was able to convert traditional three-point plays off a pair of Colgate turnovers. With momentum seemingly getting away from them, the Raiders rallied with more effective defense. Daniel Waddy was able to block a Navy attempt well into the stands. The block allowed Colgate to maintain the momentum and weather the Navy flurry. Senior Jon Simon began hitting his attempts from three, and the Raiders strung together a 10-0 run with 4 minutes left in the half, helping Colgate amass a 30-18 lead. Although Navy went scoreless for over 7 minutes, Colgate couldn’t capitalize often enough and Navy remained within striking distance. Navy was able to whittle down the Raider advantage down to 7 points with under a minute in the first half, 33-26.
Kyle Chones began his second half much like his first, shooting well from the field and drawing fouls, helping Colgate open a 42-28 lead. Navy would not go away however. Putting together a 21-10 run, Navy closed the lead down to 1 point. Greg Spink began figuring out the Colgate defense, driving the lane and scoring almost at will, totaling 27 points on the day. The Colgate defense did a great job limiting chances from beyond the arc, but was dominated in the paint. Colgate tried to counter with a 2-3 zone, but the sharp shooting Midshipmen forced the Raiders back into man. Kendall Chones scored 6 of his 10 points in the second half, helping answer Navy’s offensive rally. Another senior, Marc Daniels, put an exclamation point on a 6-point Colgate lead by slamming down a loose ball. Time after time, the Colgate defense held their ground against Sprink and Kina down the stretch. Daniels chipped in a near double-double with 9 points and 8 boards, and Simon hit his free throws with Navy down multiple possessions with under a minute remaining to ice it.
