American defeats Carleton (Ca.) in exhibition

3 November, 2006

by

American University downed four-time Canadian National Champion Carleton 64-62 in overtime. Brayden Billbe had 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Andre Ingram added 12 points and 9 boards in 40 minutes of work. The loss was Carleton’s second in their ten-game exhibition schedule; the other was a one-point loss to Louisville.

Slant: American’s starting five was the same group that started most of last season, but sophomore Garrison Carr and junior Travis Lay garnered 20 and 16 minutes off the bench respectively. That was partly a desire on Jeff Jones’ part not to overwork anyone in an exhibition game, but Carr and Lay could be key players on American’s long bench. Carr is a dangerous long-range threat (41.9 percent from beyond the arc last year), and Lay is a tough, versatile player who had more success than anyone on American’s roster guarding Bucknell center Chris McNaughton last season.
