With last place in the Patriot League on the line, Navy downed Lafayette 70-63 for their second road win this week. Greg Sprink scored 29 points to lead the Mids, who climb into a three-way tie for fifth place with the victory.

Lafayette was the team that started out hot, racing to a 16-6 lead on the strength of 7 points from Jesper Andersson. After the Leopards brought their lead to 19-13, though, they ran cold, as Navy went on a 15-2 run to take command of the game. Sprink had 14 first-half points to lead the Mids, who turned a 10-point deficit into a 10-point lead in about 12 minutes.

Lafayette came out hot again to start the second half, cutting their deficit to 3 on back-to-back threes by Andrew Brown and Matt Betley. Shortly after Betley’s three-pointer, Betley and Sprink got entangled after a Sprink offensive foul, leading to both players getting hit with technical fouls. A little bit after that, the Leopards came within 42-40, but Kaleo Kina responded with a four-point play, Sprink followed it with a three-pointer, and the Mids never again lost the lead.

Betley recorded a double-double for the Leopards, with 16 points and 10 rebounds, both team highs. Bilal Abdullah added 13 points and Brown had 11 for Lafayette. On the other side, no one but Sprink and Kina (10 points) broke double digits for the Mids, but 10 players scored for Navy, who won the battle of the benches 20-12.

Keys to the Game
Key sequence Down 19-13 in the first half, Navy reeled off a 12-0 run that had a lot to do with pressure and persistence. The Mids grabbed every available rebound in this game stretch (3 offensive and 2 defensive), forced Lafayette into 2 turnovers, and pushed inside, scoring 3 buckets in the paint. This game stretch showed how effective Navy can be when it flawlessly executes its gameplan.
Key sign it was over Lafayette had the ball down by 6, but Bilal Abdullah turned the ball over with 2:01 left. Lafayette chose not to foul, and Navy ran the clock down to 1:31 before Sprink drilled a three-pointer to effectively put the game out of reach.
Key performance Sprink asserted himself as an offensive force, pouring in 29 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the floor, including 3 three-pointers.
Key statistic Navy went 10-of-23 from beyond the arc, Lafayette just 8-of-29. Both teams live and die by the three ball; this time, Lafayette couldn’t shoot well enough to keep up.

Notes
Lafayette dominated on the boards 40-30. They got 11 offensive boards, but only made 8 second-chance points out of them.
Clif Colbert got rare minutes for the Mids, garnering 3 points and 7 boards in 14 minutes of play.
The Leopards had 19 turnovers, compared to 12 for Navy.
This Wednesday, these two teams face the top of the Patriot League, as Lafayette heads to Bucknell and Navy hosts Holy Cross.
