The Bucknell Bison were able to hang on for a victory on the road at Colgate, 56-53. The Raiders were without the inside presence of Kendall Chones due to the flu for the second straight game.

Bucknell came out flat, turning the ball over 6 times in the first 10 minutes. Colgate was able to capitalize, something it hasn’t been able to accomplish in other games. The Raiders staked a 17-2 lead, receiving scoring from all of their starters in the opening minutes. Dan Gentile, in a rare start, sank his first try from three. Jon Simon was also shooting well, hitting his first 2 threes.

The offensive inconsistency then returned for the Raiders, and Colgate went scoreless for 6 minutes. This allowed The Bison to cut into the lead with Chris McNaughton in the low post, pounding the less talented Raider big men. The drought continued for Colgate. After more 8 minutes, Simon ended the 7-0 Bucknell run. Bucknell’s own offensive woes were caused by the 12 turnovers in the half. This is uncharacteristic for the Bison, averaging 11 turnovers for the game. Bucknell shot 30.0 percent from the floor, but still managed to remain competitive in the game. It was by far the worst offensive half Bucknell has played this season.

Gentile scored on an opening drive to the basket to start the half, and Simon connected from three to push the Colgate lead to 8. But Bison point guard Abe Badmus began playing better in the second half. After committing 5 turnovers to his 1 assist, Badmus was able to find a wide-open Jason Vegotsky for three. After a Ben Jonson foul with 14:40 remaining, Bucknell was behind 28-31. A 16-0 Bucknell run allowed the Bison to take the first substantial lead of the game, 39-31. Vegotsky remained hot from beyond the arc, hitting another trey with 9:35 left in the game. Colgate seemed winded and cramping with most of the team battling flu symptoms. Todd Checovich and Daniel Waddy both had to spend time on the exercise bike to work out cramps. Alex Woodhouse, who missed last game with the flu, also looked less then 100 percent.

Bucknell continued to pour it on, With Donald Brown getting into the lane and finishing with a lay-up to expand the Bison advantage to 46-34. The lone Raider who seemed able to score was Simon, who was draining threes with regularity but was unable to spark a Colgate rally. Bucknell did a better job executing in the second half, committing only 1 turnover in the second half. With 6:49 to play, Colgate couldn’t score and Bucknell kept amassing its lead, 50-37. The Raiders made a furious 13-2 rally to come close, but Bucknell hit their foul shots in the final minute and held on for the victory.
