In the 105th meeting between the two schools, the Black Knights from Army came out on top with a 53-50 win. Army built on their record-setting home win streak, which now stands at 8 games. Navy dropped to 11-9 overall with the loss and to 1-4 in Patriot League play, while Army peeked over .500 in league play at 3-2.
Senior guard Matt Bell paced the Black Knights with 16 points, going 3-for-4 from behind the arc. Bell, who was in Army coach Jim Crews’ first recruiting class, found open looks off screens to hit threes, and also created his own shot by slithering through creases in the Navy defense. He suffered from inconsistency at the line down the stretch, going 2-for-4 inside the last 11 seconds, but Navy wasn’t able to capitalize on the misses. 6-7 forward Doug Williams provided a huge presence in the paint for the Black Knights. He recorded 10 rebounds and was 2 points shy of a double-double with 8 points. With 2:38 remaining, he took a dish from Corban Bates and threw down a one-handed dunk, giving Army a 49-45 lead. Bates provided a spark in the clutch, sinking his first three-pointer since Dec. 6 against NJIT to put the Knights on top 47-43 with 4:09 remaining. Navy was led by their leading scorer Greg Sprink, who recorded 19 points on 6-of-15 shooting. He also grabbed 6 rebounds and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the line. Sprink cut the Army lead to 2 when he sank a three-pointer with 6 seconds left, but was unable to tie the game on a last second heave from well beyond the arc. Army concluded their three-game homestand with the win over Navy, and will now head on the road to battle Lafayette, who rank at the bottom of the Patriot League with a 1-4 record. Navy remains on the road with a match-up against American, who is coming off a closely-contested loss to Holy Cross. |
