Jarell Brown paced Army yet again with 18 points on 5-for-15 shooting as the Black Knights defeated the Lehigh Mountain Hawks 64-59 Saturday at West Point. It was the first Patriot League victory for the Knights, who now stand at 1-2 in the conference and 11-7 overall. Army’s ability to win home games is highlighted by their 7-1 record at Christl Arena.
Lehigh took an early 2-0 lead on a Marquis Hall jumper, but failed to capitalize on the fast start as Army ended the first half with a 31-24 lead and never relinquished it. Army sophomore starting forward Kenny Brewer went down 1:40 into the game with an apparent ankle sprain, but returned with 11:14 left in the half. The Black Knights won the turnover battle, committing only 10 to Lehigh’s 22, and were also able to capitalize on them in the transition game. Senior guard Cory Sinning was a big part of the scrappy defensive effort, recording 3 steals. Marshall Jackson and Brown were both huge for Army, combining for 6-of-9 from three-point land. The team as a whole shot particularly well from behind the arc, going 56.3 percent, measurably higher than their season average. Lehigh was led by freshman Hall, who went 8-of-9 from the field for 21 points in the losing effort. Lehigh’s leading scorerJose Olivero was limited to 7 points and committed a game-high 6 turnovers. Army’s Matt Bell and Sinning smothered Olivero throughout the afternoon, not allowing him to penetrate for open looks Although Lehigh snuck back into the game at the end, closing the gap to 6 points, they were never able to surmount the deficit. This was partly attributed to clutch free throws down the stretch by Brown, who went 6-for-8 from the charity stripe. |
