An another exciting finish on the Patriot League’s opening day of play, Lehigh downed American 51-49 on a Phil Anderson bucket with 2 seconds left. The Eagles got off a potential game-tying shot as time expired but could not hit it.

The game was tight all night, with 8 lead changes and 8 ties. The Eagles opened several 5-point leads in the first half but could never extend it further. Lehigh came back to take the lead but they too could never control the game by more than 5 points. The game was marred by poor shooting by both teams. American was 26.1 percent from the field, including 5-of-19 from the arc; Lehigh was 38.3 percent from the field and 3-for-12 on three-pointers. Each team’s star scorer had a poor shooting night: Jose Olivero led the Mountain Hawks with 11 points but shot 5-for-15 from the field, and Andre Ingram was 2-for-8 on the night for a total of 9 points. The Eagles used free-throw shooting to stay in the game, hitting 9 of 10 attempts in the second half and 87.0 percent of foul shots overall.

American was expected to have the inside advantage, with Lehigh center Jason Mgebroff on the shelf with injuries. Brayden Billbe scored 11 points and grabbed 7 rebounds for American, but no one else could do much. Paulius Joneliunas, Jordan Nichols, Travis Lay and starter Brian Gilmore combined for just 2 points and 5 rebounds all night. Meanwhile, Lehigh’s frontcourt combo of Bryan White, Phil Anderson, Zahir Carrington and John Gourlay combined for 23 points and 14 boards.

Keys to the Game

Arvydas Eitutavicius attempted a response three but was off the mark; American got the rebound but missed another shot. Olivero missed a jumper, giving the ball back to the Eagles. Eitutavicius was fouled and converted both free throws, tying the game with 24 seconds left. Lehigh held for the last shot, where Olivero missed a runner but Phil Anderson grabbed the rebound and put in a shot off the glass.
Key sign it was over American had one last chance with 2 seconds remaining. Brian Gilmore inbounded the ball the length of the court to Brayden Billbe, but Billbe missed a jumper that would have forced overtime.
Key performance Freshman guard Marquis Hall had a great introduction to Patriot League play, recording 8 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 4 steals.
Key statistic Lehigh scored 22 points in the paint, American 8. With Lehigh’s starting center Jason Mgebroff out with injury, 7-footer John Gourlay came off the bench to score 10 and push around the Eagles’ interior.

Notes
Once again, the Eagles were led by Arvydas Eitutavicius, who scored 15 points off the bench. Eitutavicius had American’s last 5 points in the game, as well as a key defensive rebound with under a minute left.
Lehigh grabbed 8 steals, led by Hall’s 4, and forced the Eagles into 14 turnovers. American got 6 steals from 5 different players, and harassed Lehigh into 10 turnovers. Each team also got 10 assists.
The Eagles haven’t defeated Lehigh since February of 2005. The Mountain Hawks are now 7-1 against American since Olivero and Ingram came into the Patriot League, including the 2004 League Championship game where as a freshman, Olivero hit the game-winning shot to send Lehigh to the NCAA Tournament.
Lehigh travels to Navy Wednesday night as Patriot League play continues, while American heads to Bucknell Tuesday as they look to avoid an 0-2 start.
