Inside the Patriot – Jan. 5

5 January, 2007

by

Game of the Week
American at Bucknell – Tuesday, January 9, 7 pm
American is expected to compete with the top teams in the league this year; Bucknell is expected to remain one of the top teams in the league this year. Each squad is a test for the other: Can Bucknell finally find some offense on the perimeter against American’s cavalcade of small, quick guards? Can American’s front line put points on the board against undersized but athletic Bison forward Donald Brown? One of these two teams will exit the first week of league play with a big boost, the other will be heading back to the drawing board.

Line of the Week

Impressing

League teams show overtime toughness. Holy Cross and Navy both maintained composure after emotional and wild ends to the regulations of their road games against Boston University and NJIT respectively, and both held on to win in overtime on hostile grounds.
Colgate’s Marc Daniels continues his great defense. The most unheralded center in the Patriot League continued to help his team without scoring, posting 3 blocks and 5 rebounds in 19 minutes against Cornell.
Lafayette puts points on the board. Granted, it’s the silver lining of a definite cloud, but the Leopards managed to score 68 and 73 respectively in losses to San Diego State and Temple. If they can score with regularity in league play they’ll be able to steal some wins.
Distressing

Bucknell loses to Central Arkansas. It seemed like a typo at first. That’s a game the Bison absolutely cannot lose, and it bodes poorly for them heading into league play.
Poor showings against the Ivy League. The Patriot finished with a whimper in losing the season series to the Ivies, dropping all four battles with Ivy League teams this week.
Lehigh loses under “questionable” circumstances. This one deserves its own line. The Mountain Hawks looked to have come away with a victory over Columbia until a late whistle on the last play of the game gave the Lions a chance to win the game from the line. Lafayette also lost a game to Princeton the same way earlier this year.
