2006 newcomer breakdown: Colgate

1 November, 2006

by

The Newcomers:
PF Ben Jonson – 6-6, 225 lbs – St. Marks School (Dallas, TX)
Jonson, the Private School Player of the Year according to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, is a strong forward who can score and rebound.

C Joe Guiler – 6-9, 213 lbs – Johnstown Monroe (Johnstown, OH)
A McDonalds All-America nominee, Guiler was a dominating presense in the paint in high school. He posted 10 rebounds and 6.8 blocks per game, to go with his 10 points. Guiler is going to need a bulkier frame to manhandle Patriot League frontcourts in that manner, but his skills and instincts are already well-developed.

The Fit:
The Raiders have depth in the frontcourt this year, with Alex Woodhouse, Marc Daniels, Kendall Chones and Peter Minchella all back, seemingly healthy, and ready to go. If someone is needed to step in this year, Emmett Davis may be inclined to go with Kyle Chones playing out of position rather than the freshmen.

Down the road, both Guiler and Jonson are expected to play important roles. Guiler is already the second tallest player on the team, and before the start of next season he may end up passing Minchella on the center depth chart. Colgate has always seemed to be pushed around inside on defense, even when not undersized; Guiler will help change that.

Jonson may start to see time by the end of this season in the type of “firestarter” role that Donald Brown has played in the past for Bucknell. Davis will slowly acclimate Jonson to Patriot League play, preparing him to be a scorer and playmaker for the team later in his college career.
