Keys to the Game |
Key sequence |
After Army sliced what had once been a 15-point Dartmouth lead to 46-45 with 6:13 remaining, Leon Pattman hit a pair of free throws and followed an Army miss with a three-pointer from the right elbow. John Ball jumped high to steal the ensuing inbounds pass near midcourt, and then converted a drive-and-dish layup from Marlon Sanders. An Army miss, 1-for-2 free throw shooting by Sanders, another Army miss, and a rousing two-hand baseline jam by Alex Barnett off a Ball assist finished off a 10-0 run that made it 57-45 with 3:13 remaining.

Key sign it was over |
With Dartmouth leading 59-50 and 1:17 left, DeVon Mosley was fouled on a breakway layup and made both shots. When Ball blocked Tyrell Thompson’s layup at the backboard and grabbed the rebound, it led to a Mosley layup that made it 63-50 with 58 seconds to play. Army got no closer than seven the rest of the way.

Key performance |
Leon Pattman was back to his old self, scoring a game-high 23 points on 4-of-5 shooting from outside the arc, 6-of-8 overall from the field, and 7-of-8 from the line. |
Key statistic |
After missing its final 11 shots of the first half — a field goal drought lasting over nine minutes — Dartmouth shot 12-for-19 (63.2 percent) from the field in the second half.

Notes
– As usual, Matt Bell (19 points) and Jarell Brown (17 points) led the way for the Black Knights. The pair combined to shoot 8-for-12 from outside the arc, despite Dartmouth defenders working hard to fight through very aggressive Army screens.
– In addition to his key dunk in the second half, Barnett had 10 rebounds, nine points, two blocks, and a breakway windmill dunk.
– Ball went 6-for-9 from the field, scored 12 points, and had two steals and a block, while Mosley had 12 points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists.
– The Big Green got off to a great start, jumping out to a 20-5 lead 8:47 into the contest. The Black Knights would answer with a 16-3 run to get right back in the game, but never could tie or take the lead.
– The win improves Dartmouth to 5-1 since the return of Leon Pattman.
– Dartmouth was just 11-for-20 (55.0 percent) from the foul line in the second half and 14-for-24 (58.3 percent) on the game.
– Dartmouth forced 20 Army turnovers, including eight by Bell, and outscored the Black Knights 23-5 in points off turnovers.
– Army shot very well from three (9 of 17, 52.9 percent), but was just 10 of 29 (34.5 percent) inside the arc. The Big Green dominated the perimeter-oriented Black Knights, outscoring them 26-10 in the paint.
– Army will look to get back on track when it opens Patriot League play at Colgate (5-7) in Hamilton on Saturday, January 6 at 1:00 pm ET.
