Yale upped their record against Patriot League teams this fall to 2-2 with a 74-59 victory at Navy. Casey Hughes scored 14 points to lead the Bulldogs.
The first half was very even, with 6 ties and 6 lead changes. The game was tied at 31-apiece before 2 final-minute three-pointers gave Yale their halftime margin. A scary moment with just under 5 minutes left in the half, as Yale’s leading scorer Eric Flato went hard into a chair just off the court and injured his ankle. He had to be helped off the court, and returned to the bench before heading to the locker room for good. The injury was not overly serious, as Flato was seen walking around testing the ankle out at halftime.
The second half began with more of the same, with Yale leading by between 1 and 4 points, until a big Bulldog run gave them a 55-43 lead. Yale responded with 9 consecutive points on 2 three-pointers from Bryce Brigham and one from Greg Sprink. Yale maintained its grip on the lead by running off 9 straight points of their own. Navy could not find any offensive rhythm the rest of the way.
The Bulldogs had 9 players score points, with Hughes’s 14 and Caleb Holmes’s 12 leading the way. Navy was led by Greg Sprink’s 13 points and 5 rebounds, and Atam Teague’s 12 points and 4 rebounds.

Keys to the Game |
Key sequence |
With 16:51 left, Yale had the ball up 42-41. Holmes converted a four-point play for the Bulldogs, and on Navy’s inbounds, Ross Morin stole the ball, was fouled and hit 1 free throw. That 5-point possession began a 13-2 Yale run that gave them their largest lead of the game, 55-43.
|
Key sign it was over |
A Sprink free throw cut Navy’s deficit to 66-55 with under 4 minutes to go. Navy scored only 4 points the rest of the way, as the Mids could not find a way to get the ball in the basket.
|
Key performance |
Matt Kyle scored 10 points and grabbed 5 rebounds for the Bulldogs. He played tough interior defense against Navy’s slashers and wriggled his way to the hoop repeatedly.
|
Key statistic |
Yale’s bench outscored Navy’s 29-8. When Flato went down, several Bulldogs stepped up, but no backup Midshipmen helped out Sprink and Co.
