Saturday Patriot League round-up

30 December, 2006

by

In the shocker of the day, Bucknell lost 50-48 to Central Arkansas, a Southland Conference team who came into the game with an RPI of 325. The end was back and forth, with Jason Vegotsky converting a four-point play to give Bucknell a 1-point lead before Marcus Pillow, who finished with 18, hit a three to win it. The Bison lost despite shooting many more free throws than Central Arkansas (17 to 3). Vegotsky led Bucknell with 10 points. Center Chris McNaughton scored 5 points, attempting only 4 shots all game.

A day after downing La Salle, Holy Cross suffered a setback, losing 67-61 to the Niagara Purple Eagles. Holy Cross claimed an 11-point lead with 8 minutes to go before allowing the Purple Eagles to come back. Keith Simmons led all scorers with 23 points. A day after breaking out with 15 points, Kyle Cruze shot just 1-for-11 en route to a 3-point performance in 36 minutes. Both teams played short benches, with only one sub on each team playing double-digit minutes.

League woes continued as Lehigh was stomped 67-39 by Monmouth. Lehigh shot 5-for-19 for three and 8-for-26 on two-pointers. The Mountain Hawks had a 4-to-19 assist-to-turnover ratio and were blocked 8 times in what will almost certainly be their worst performance of the year. Marquis Hall was the one Mountain Hawk to have a good game, scoring 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting.

The night ended as bad for the Patriot League as it began, with Colgate dropping a 75-42 decision to George Washington. Colgate shot 13-for-49 from the floor. The Colonials had four players in double figures scoring; the Raiders were led by Kendall Chones’s 12 points. Colgate’s leading scorer Jon Simon scored just 3 points, shooting 1-for-9 from the arc.
