In a hard-fought game between local rivals, American stayed close for a while before dropping a game to Maryland 66-54. Andre Ingram had a big day for the Eagles with 24 points but it was not enough to slow down the much bigger and stronger Terps.

The game was an even battle at the start; there were 8 ties and 8 lead changes in the first half. With American up 5-2, the Terps ran off 8 consecutive points and seemed to be imposing their will, but Andre Ingram fired back with consecutive buckets. He scored 12 of American’s first 14. The refs seemed inclined to let the players play when American was on offense, often letting hard hits slide beneath the basket. Eventually the Terps broke out with a 12-0 run, but American rallied to keep it close at the half, with Ingram hitting a last-second basket. Ingram led all scorers with 14 points at the break.

Maryland came out hot to start the second half, making a 13-2 run (including 2 D.J. Strawberry three-pointers) to take a 50-33 lead. From there the Terps slowed the game down and tried to hold the Eagles at bay. American chipped away though, using an 8-1 run to come within 57-46 with 7:23 to go. However, the Eagles could never get back within single digits.

Ingram was the only Eagle in double figures, with Linas Lekavicius adding 7 points. Strawberry led the Terps with 19 points, James Gist added 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Ekene Ebekwe scored 11 and grabbed 12 boards.

Keys to the Game
Key sequence With the Eagles up 27-26, there was a media timeout with 3:48 to go in the first half. Coming out of the break, Strawberry hit two free throws. After Maryland’s defense caused a backcourt violation, Will Bowers got a lay-up for the Terps. American lost the ball their next three trips, due to a travel, offensive goaltending, and turnover. Each time, Maryland hit a basket. Finally the Eagles called timeout with 1:40 to go, now down by 10.
Key sign it was over A Jordan Nichols lay-in brought American within 61-50 with under 4 minutes left, and the Eagles actually had the ball and a chance to cut it to single digits. But Arvydas Eitutatvicius missed a shot, and Mike Jones hit a three to make it a 14-point game. That brought the crowd back into it and buried any hopes of an American miracle.
Key performance Strawberry had a game-high 19 points, including 3 three-pointers. He always seemed to hit a big shot at the right time to rile the crowd and ignite a rally.
Key statistic The Eagles used good shooting to stay close in the first half, going 50.0 percent from the field. It all fell apart in the second half, as the Eagles shot 8-of-27.

Notes
The Terps won the battle of the boards 37-30.
The Eagles were just 4-for-14 from three.
