It’s been the prototypical story of a Patriot League squad facing a power conference team this year: Colgate stayed with Syracuse for a half, before the Orange ran away with a big offensive output to win 79-52. Demetris Nichols led all scorers with 28 points, after scoring just 4 in the first half.

In a strange first half, Syracuse opened a few 9-point leads but Colgate kept making small runs to bring the score close. A Kyle Chones basket made it 33-30 Syracuse with seconds to go in the half, but starting with the last shot of the half into the start of the second period, Syracuse ran off a 17-3 run to take command. The Raiders could not keep up, shooting 25.8 percent from the field in the second half as the Orange lead ballooned to 30.

Kyle Chones led Colgate with 18 points off the bench. The entire Raider starting five scored just 14 points, shooting a combined 6-for-31. Syracuse freshman phenom Paul Harris had just 2 points but grabbed 7 rebounds and dished 3 assists.

Keys to the Game
Key sequence Syracuse came out of halftime scoring on four straight possessions. On two of them, they missed a shot but corralled an offensive rebound before scoring. In the same time frame, Colgate missed four shots, several of them rushed. These opening minutes set the tone for a half where the Orange would run away.
Key sign it was over With the Orange up 15 and 11:10 to go, Nichols hit 3 three-pointers in a 2:20 span, and Terrence Roberts added a transition lay-up while the Raiders went scoreless. The Raider deficit was now 26, and it would grow to 30 before Colgate scored again.
Key performance Nichols had 24 second-half points, including 6 three-pointers. Nichols single-handedly outscored Colgate in the second half.
Key statistic Syracuse was 13-of-21 from the arc all night, the Raiders 2-of-16.
