The Colgate Raiders won easily at home over the Division-3 Elmira Soaring Eagles 82-33. Colgate shot 50.7 percent from the floor and didn’t allow an Elmira scorer in double digits.

Marc Daniels dominated on defense in the early minutes, swatting away three Soaring Eagle shots. Tim Pounds returned to the starting lineup and had 4 points early, earning a 5-point Raider advantage. Elmira opened with a Harlem Globetrotters-style weave in its half court offense. The style didn’t phase the Raiders. Colgate was able to cause six turnovers in the opening minutes. Kyle Chones went 3-for-3 off the bench and Colgate continued to pull away. The Raiders built a 15-3 advantage.

The Raiders avoided the foul trouble which plagued them in their previous loss to Harvard. Elmira helped the Colgate cause by shooting 2-for-15 from the field to begin the game. Colgate faired better than average, going 10-of-18 in the opening minutes. Colgate quickly built a 20-point lead and subbed in their bench. Daniel Waddy added an exclamation point in the final seconds of the half, following a Soaring Eagle turnover with a two-handed jam.

Elmira opened the second half and was able to go shot for shot with Colgate. After only scoring 12 in the first half, Elmira suddenly scored 5 in the opening minutes of the second half. Mendez led Elmira scorers with 8. Colgate never allowed the game to become competitive.

 
Keys to the Game
Key sequence The opening offensive possessions for the Soaring Eagles se the pace for the rest of the game. Elmira’s K.C. Mendez was stuffed by Daniels on a jumper at 18:56 in the first half. Elmira hustled to get the rebound, only for Palen Andreozzi to also get stuffed by Daniels. Colgate rebounded and turned the ball over. The next Elmira possession Daniels struck again, literally, swatting another Elmira shot from KC Mendez. Elmira never got the score closer than that.
Key sign it was over Matt Keading sank a three to pull Elmira within 2 points in the opening minute. Elmira then missed it’s next 10 three-pointers.
Key performance Kyle Chones led all scorers with 12.
Key statistic Elmira didn’t take a foul shot until 14:22 left in the game.
 
Notes
The outmanned Eagles had only 15 basketball players. That looked around 2 or 3 less then the Soaring Eagle cheerleading squad.
Freshman Joe Guiler scored the first 4 points of his college career.
Elmira went 4-21 last year, playing in the Empire-8 conference.
Colgate forced 28 turnovers.
Colgate next faces Syracuse in the Carrier Dome Saturday night.
