Billy Lange: Verbatim

In just his third year as head coach of Navy, Billy Lange has brought youth and energy to Annapolis. Coaching a team packed with underclassmen, Lange led the Midshipmen to a 7-2 start to this season and currently has them jostling for position in the Patriot League. Lange took the time to talk to Basketball U.’s Elliot Smilowitz about his players, his coaching style, and his hopes for the future of the Navy program.

Key Sequence: Marquis Hall scored the first points of the game for Lehigh with a three-pointer. Moments later, Jose Olivero nailed a three of his own, making the score 8-1.These two shots began a huge run for Lehigh, who stormed to a 19-4 lead less than 10 minutes into the game. Lehigh shot 7-for-11 in that stretch, while Lafayette went 1-for-12.

Key Sequence: With 2:50 left in the first half, Jon Simon hit a pair of free throws to bring Colgate within 2 points. Jason Vegotsky responded with a three-pointer, and after Simon missed a shot, Bucknell scored again on a tipped-in offensive rebound by Stephen Tyree. This shift in the game gave Bucknell the momentum it needed to begin blowing open the game, as they brought their lead to 9 at the half.

Key Sequence: With 1:23 to go in regulation, Clifford hit a jumper in the lane to push the Crusaders ahead 58-54. On the next possession, Eitutavicius tossed a pass that was intercepted by Pat Doherty. The Crusaders ran down the clock to 37 seconds before Thomas missed a jumper. Ingram rebounded and Thomas fouled him. Ingram hit both ends of the one-and-one. The Eagles quickly fouled Thomas, who missed the front end of a one-and-one. Eitutavicius was fouled by Thomas with 25 seconds left, and he hit both ends of the one-and-one. Holy Cross held for a final shot, but Doherty airballed a three-pointer out of bounds with 3.3 seconds left, leaving American time for a final shot. Eitutavicius missed a miracle three-pointer as time expired in regulation.

Gamecenter: Lehigh 60, Colgate 59

Key Sequence: A Simon three-pointer early in the second half brought Colgate within 30-26. From there, Lehigh went on a 9-0 run, highlighted by 7 combined points from freshmen Marquis Hall, Matt Shamis and Zahir Carrington. Colgate would fight back and come close, but this run gave Lehigh the cushion they needed to hold on.
