December 4 Power Rankings

The Patriot League had another big week, going 14-6 overall. No individual school was worse than .500 on the week. These big preseason performances help the entire league, and when conference play begins every team’s RPI is better off for the league’s overall performance. Light schedule on deck this week, with student-athletes across the country prepping for final exams.

Gamecenter: Bucknell 60, George Mason 57

Monday, December 4th, 2006

Key Sequence: Not even 5 minutes into the game, Mason held an 8-6 lead and the ball. Vaughan missed a three-pointer which was rebounded by Brown, and the Bison would make baskets their next four trips down court, on a Brown tip-in, Justin Castleberry lay-up, Brown fast break lay-up, and Castleberry trey. Meanwhile, the Patriots were scoreless for five full minutes. The draught left them down 15-8 and gave the Bison control of the game.

Gamecenter: Northern Iowa 57, Bucknell 48

Key Sequence: With 7:26 to go, Bucknell tied the game 42-all. Northern Iowa missed two three-point attempts but grabbed offensive rebounds before McKowen finally hit a trey. Badmus had a shot blocked, and back the other way, Badmus was called for a loose-ball foul and the Bucknell bench was whistled for a technical foul. McKowen hit both technical free throws, and Jared Josten hit both ends of a one-and-one, to give the Panthers a 4-point possession and a 49-42 lead.

Gamecenter: Lehigh 55, Central Connecticut 52

Key Sequence: With 2:47 to go, Central Connecticut had the ball and a 50-47 edge, but failed to make it a two-possession game when Dannie Powell missed a shot. Olivero hit a transition lay-up, and then Tristan Blackwood missed a shot for the Blue Devils. Olivero scored a basket to give Lehigh a 1-point lead, and after Blackwood made a jumper, Hall hit a pull-up jump shot to give Lehigh the lead permanently.

Gamecenter: Lafayette 72, St. Peter’s 69

Saturday, December 2nd, 2006

Key Sequence: With 21 seconds left, Brown hit a free throw to take a 69-67 lead, but missed a second attempt. Orta hit a game-tying jumper with 9 seconds left, leading to the final shot of the game. Detmer’s three from the top of the key with 1 second gave Lafayette its final margin of victory.
